Dakhmeh-hayeh-Zartoshtian or Zoroastrians towers of silence

In Persia, Zoroastrians used to leave the dead bodies on the rocky hills around the city for birds to eat their flesh rather than burying them under earth or burning them. The place always had a wall around to block any entry from ground. Persians call these tours of silence as Dakhmeh.

knowhow

A three-hour tour to a very tranquil place where your mind and thoughts sink in the past traditions of Zoroastrians’ rituals of death. Part of the road is asphalt while a few kilometers is sandy which makes driving slow.  After an-hour visit, the tour gets back to Kerman. The place enjoys a tranquil atmosphere with a very photogenic scenery of large pistachio gardens around the hills.
There are a lot of pieces of discovered bones there in these two towers of silence. Visitors get very excited when facing the scene. There are no doors to enter them but two window-like gates at least 1.5 meters high. That’s the way they used to block the entering of any animal.
